More than a bloody year??

Really?? Gawd, that goes fast! I must surely be one of the most crappest bloggers in the world. I'm having one of those MEH days... well, a meh WEEK, if I'm being honest with myself. I just don't give a crap about anything (even work... ESPECIALLY work) and people are all dicks. All people. PMS is a mean mean thing.
At least I can always count on the kids to cheer me up - the Smallest (who has just turned NINE!) has a new project, as of this morning on the train: she is trying to stretch her tongue. Apparently Rose can touch her nose with her tongue and the Smallest has figured out she just needs a longer tongue. I'll keep you posted on her progress... although I haven;t got my head around how to measure it, yet.

More musings of a Children's Library Person...

Upon sitting at the main desk, seeing a mum self-issue her books, then hearing her little boy say "Mum.. MUM! I'm holding my penis!"

Oh, the joy.

Quite possibly the biggest knob-head in the world?

I was watching the late news last night and happened upon a piece of the Queen's latest visit to that big white house. I was horrified to see, in his speech, not that GWB made a gaffe pertaining to Her Majesty's age, but that he turned around and WINKED at her. She was clearly very unamused.

I have yet to figure out whether I am a snobbish, old-fashioned royalist, or if GWB is a good old-fashioned knobhead.

and upon looking for a pic of Ab Fab's Bubble...

I realised, with a conspiracy theorist's sinking heart, that the major cast members' first names in Absolutely Fabulous all begin with the letter J....

Jennifer Saunders
Joanna Lumley
Julia Sawalha
June Whitfield
Jane Horrocks

Eewww. Creepy.

Aahh, the irony

... that the day I choose to be the prodigal daughter and venture back into BlogLand comes AFTER I have moved my workspace/desk/crap from the office we call Siberia, to the general workroom. WIIIIIDE out in the open. I have to keep my screen half-up, over my Outlook. Does anybody know if that works? Does it make my computer screen look "officially" busy??

It took me about FOUR goes to remember my password, that's how bad I have been. But I have an excuse (well, for my recent absence, anyhoo). My dog died. I'd had Bubble (named after the ditzy receptionist on Absolutely Fabulous) for eight years, since she was a weeeeee mite. She managed to get acute pancreatitis. I miss her. Dreadfully. But that's all I want to say about that.
Anyhoo... I have so much bollocks piling up gathering dust in my head, that it's quite overwhelming. Like remembering to take my pills (another post in itself!), I have resolved to blog at regular intervals. I WILL. Pinky Promise.

The last word goes to The Smallest (again!), upon discussion of different kinds of birds:

"I don't believe in hawks!"

Violet chastised me!

I haven't posted for sooooo long! Again! You know, I think about it every day; something happens and I think "Ooh, I must blog about that", but it never happens. I'm such a procrastinator.

FIRSTLY - thanks to T. and C4, I have been getting some giggles out of
Little Britain. Definitely not something Americans would "get", I'm sure, but it's hilarious... kind of like a modern-day The Goodies, if my childhood memories serve me correctly. I clicked on the character guide and was disappointed to not find "Carol `Computer Says No' Beer... that's her answer to everything - "computer says no" in a wonderful monotone. GOD how I want to use that line on the front desk!!!!! But Anne is there - she's my second favourite. So New Zealanders - it's on C4, Tuesday, 9.30pm. Puhleeeeese watch it!

My dear, dear friend/ex-workmate/ex-neighbour came done at the weekend - it's always so wonderful to see her and her whanau. Bizarrely though, when we're together, it feels like she never left and things are always as comfortable as they always were; she's that kind of person. I adore her.

I made T. and the `mos watch the ORIGINAL
"When a Stranger Calls" on Saturday. I've always loved this movie, even with the crap filler-stuff in the middle; the beginning and the end are legendary. I'm sort of curious to see the 2006 remake, but I'm not sure.

I think that'll do to ease me back into the blogging - if I keep going, I'll run out of stuff for the rest of the week!!

Keep cool til after school.

The weekend's antics

The biggest news is that the Oldest is now in a womanly way... and she's only ten!! We had a Woman's Day on Monday and went clothes/shoe shopping, had morning tea at a posh cafe and I bought her her first pounamu... I was going to wait until she was thirteen, but this seems appropriate. She's dying to wear it, but she has to wait til the local kaumatua bless it for her.
I got a dreadful shock later on on Monday afternoon - I was sitting outside enjoying the sun with the GF and the neighbour and a couple of children running around. Except the Smallest. She was apparently riffling through my bedside drawers, as she came out outside saying "Mu-uum, what's this?" She was merrily waggling my vibrator around. I was out of my lounger faster than God, mumbling something about it being a funny sort of torch.
She said she'd been looking for batteries.

Blonde comment of the week

The Smallest: "Mum, Mum - I can't see!"

Upon turning around in the car, I saw she had a bucket on her head.

I made that.

I've been away... sorry.

To try and put it delicately, my lunar cycle had a dampening effect on my mood toward the end of the month, so I spent a few days in the MH ward. I wrote while I was in there; some excerpts written here are from my observing the other patients, so I have to edit it heavily (which is why it will appear broken, or in little parts). Otherwise it's just my semi-reflective ponderings.
"- The person who intrigues me most is the scariest-looking one here. He looks like a black Bin Laden with his beard. He sits all scrunched up in his heavy coat and his beanie. He stoically nurses his cigarette, whilst coughing his guts out the whole time. I watch his mouth moving and I imagine him chanting little mantras to himself. He looks terrifying, but he has this unnerving vulnerability about him that - incredibly - makes one want to hold him.
- I painted today. I am overjoyed at what I created, because I didn't think I had it in me anymore. D. instantly recognised the black hole in the middle as my own.
- You can find beauty everywhere you look here. Not in things.. in people. Beauty of the human spirit. I watch young S. offer G. his arm to lean on whilst she walked her arthritic hips down the hall. I saw unshed tears in G.'s eyes when I gave her my Women's Bible to keep. What held no importance to me anymore, became a gift that touched her deeply.
- How bizarre that I am going to miss these people. It only took them five days to show me you can find the grace of humanity in the strangest places. Without even trying."

Tena koutou

I "graduated" from my Stage 1 Te Reo course on Friday. It was really informal and lovely; they gave us a yummy morning tea, a certificate and an opportunity to stand up and say our mihi, which I did. Your mihi is an introduction of yourself to others with some information about your family, etc.

Tena koutou katoa, ko Wicked taku ingoa. Ko Te Ati Awa te iwi, ko Whanganui-a-Tara te rohe. Ko Rimutaka te maunga, ko Awakairangi te awa. Ko Shirley raua ko Paul aku matua, kua mate raua. Ko Oldest raua ko Smallest aku tamahine. Ko T. taku hoa rangatira. No reira, tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa. (Pardon the lack of macrons!)

So I'm really hoping our powers-that-be will let us do the second stage course... they funded the first, for which I'm astoundingly grateful.

Our bellydancing girls did a little show for a local retirement village on Sunday night; they seemed to really enjoy it.

Oh - and Tina & I came out of the closet to our workmates AND my kids on Friday.

MAN, I hate that!

Thanks to Martha and her bloody annoying (cos I don't get any work done), but totally irrestistible links, I am now officially Grumpy At Work. I clicked on her "face recognition" link, because I wanted to know which famous person looks like me (not the other way around, of course).
I uploaded a photo, and clicked "Recognise Me" and was faced with registering details and stuff before I could see who the famous person was. Man, I hate that!
THEN, after registering, I clicked "Recognise Me" again, I was presented with a blank screen where the famous person's face should be - we don't have Flash Player at work. Man, I hate that!
Now I have to wait til I get home and Maaaaaan, I Hate That.
You don't REALLY have annoying links, Wanda. It's just that now the anticipation is killing me. :)

Why I had children

Every now and then, they come up with real doozies, like the time her father and I asked the Oldest how high she could count - she looked very thoughtful, then raised her hand to shoulder-level and said "about that high."

I was picking the Youngest up from daycare yesterday and we were sitting on the floor putting her shoes on. She was moaning and leaning to one side, "Owww, Mum, my bum hurts, owwww... maybe there's something up there." Ever helpful, I replied "Maybe it's poos, babe." She pondered this for a second then agreed, "Yes, I think I AM a little bit complicated."

Why why, K.Y.?

I am a bad blogger. Bad bad bad. But here I am, back again.

I have been watching way too much television of late, but every now and then, the wee box throws out a doozy. I was watching a wonderfully romantic ad on Sky for a selection of grab-your-tissue movies they will be playing for your enjoyment on Valentine's Day. It was a beautiful ad - it made me sigh wistfully... until I saw that the movies were "romantically brought to you by K.Y." KILLED IT!

I'm a bit perturbed by T's propensity for violent Playstation games. I didn't think she was a particularly bloodthirsty girl (and she doesn't get the chance to indulge when the kiddies are home) and she knows I object on principle to shoot-em-up games, but she was quite vehement in her justification - "But they're Nazis, babe!" What could I say?

The curse of procrastination

I've had so much blog material over the past couple of weeks and because of my procrastinating, I've forgotten the gist of all of them. Some highlights:

* The Smallest changing her name to HannahBillyAnya. (Don't ask, it's just what she DOES)

* Me having some out of the blue epiphany about the nicest people I know having the most amazing sense of humility.

*Me deciding I would rather go to the kids' school Christmas concerts than that of a flash famous person. (it had nothing to do with being able to merrily sing along to a Wiggles tune)

*Realising just how much I love watching Eating Media Lunch. Jeremy's EML Awards, with categories like "Most innovative use of a Muppet song in an obituary or eulogy", "Christian of the Year" - nominees were Brian Tamaki, Petra Bagust, Graham Capill and Simon Barnett. Okay, so it might offend the christians, but I LIKE Jeremy's humour, it's right on the nail.

Ten days til Christmas - I'm clinging to that in the midst of all the madness at work. We have our Christmas dinner tomorrow and we have a whole pile of Grinches coming out of the woodwork, refusing to wear something Christmassy. Unlike moi, who is picking up her Santa costume tomrrow morning.

There's one at every public computer workstation

We have this little.. well, teenage snot that comes into work to use our public computers. He offers a plethora of reasons to get away with using the computers without paying (for internet use); "he's only using media player and the playlist he wants is only on the internet login" (as opposed to a restricted login), but we all knew damn well he knew how to get around it. I have told him before to stop trying to weasel his way out of paying, just use them properly like everybody else and that I was now watching him like a hawk.

The last straw came today when I had to have ANOTHER word with him today - about the media player again. I just stood my ground while he was hoping I would go away and leave him to it. He heaved this big sigh, narrowed his eyes and muttered "You're a real killjoy, you know that?" Meh, whatever: "I don't make the rules, dude - pay up or off." He offed.

That would have been okay if what happened next didn't happen - as soon as my back was turned, he was back on the computer - using Word to print out multiple copies of "Fuck you" large enough to fill an A4 sheet - which another customer picked up. By the time it had dawned on me what this lad had done, he was out the door before you could say "you little bastard!". I want him trespassed.

On a brighter note - it was the first day of registrations for our annual summer reading programme (remember those, Violet?!) Out of 150 places, we filled 40 in the first day... fantastic!!

I like that there's balance in the world.

Oh...

and my headaches have dramatically subsided. Go figure.

The assholes of the world

I had one living in my house! Although to be fair, I didn't realise this until I found snuggly pictures of him on his computer with a girl that wasn't me - and realised this was the one he'd been MSNing for hours on end each night... as if THAT was put-uppable-with by itself.

Deciding to play The Woman Scorned was quick, not thought out, but in the end, very carthartic. When my marriage ended, I Maintained a Dignified Silence and this time I thought, "What the hell?". So he came to pick up his stuff (with Mummy, no less) on Wednesday just gone and carried home: a computer less 400-odd music files, all the photos of me bar one entitled `One to remind you what you lost', and a beautiful mink blanket with a rather large hole in the middle. This was all carried out after I outed the pair of them online. And left all his stuff out in the rain.

The Nice Girl in me felt rather guilty at wreaking all this distruction, but it was largely overshadowed by the most delicious feeling of... shadenfreud, I think it is called? That wickedly lovely feeling of satisfaction you get over someone else's misery. I'm not normally the sort of woman who would resort to such despicably immature behaviour (honest, I'm not!), but I swear I would not be as far along the road to recovery if I'd just let him off the hook.

So, while donning my Evil Ex hat this time around, I don't think it would be a costume I would want to wear every time. It was nice for once, but I'll be reasonable next time... I promise.

WAHOOOOO!!!!!!

I FIGURED OUT HTML!!

I now have things in my sidebar. ~preen~

My foray into the world of neuro-nasties.

For the last 6 weeks or so, I have been plagued with cluster headaches (like being smacked in the face with a hammer) and "hemiplegic" migraines; the type that, instead of an aura, one gets pins and needles/numbness down one side of the body. They came out of nowhere; in fact the first one I had, I thought was a stroke, as the numbness went into my face and gave me a droop.

After two weeks of this, with no sign of them subsiding, I went to my GP and got a lovely pile of pills. These stopped the cluster headaches straight away, but these nasty hemiplegic jobbies continued. I took the morning off work last week to visit the neurologist, where I spent an hour and a half getting tickled with cotton wool, bopped with reflex hammers and poked with pins. I'm booked in for an MRI scan in about a month.

I am hoping now I won't need it. During this bout of headaches, the in-between times have always had a minor throb in the background, with a general sense of fragility. Well, I haven't had a headache for nearly two weeks and I am feeling very robust. But I'm not going to stop taking the pills.

I'm only just trying to figure out the point of this story now and I've decided it's "headaches suck".

PS - the bears were for a road safety video being filmed here.

When mass-emailing your coworkers doesn't prove helpful

The post I sent out:

"At lunchtime, I got groped by a life-sized teddy bear (who'd have the luck??!!) who was one of 3 coming out from Countdown, THEN saw a Panda bear somewhere else in town.
Does anyone know why there are bears running around the CBD?"

A response:

"Please send us some of your drugs, we could do with some fun."
